BOOK SUMMARY
Psychic...or psychotic?
Anna knows her family is crazy. But when she goes to visit her aunt and uncle for the summer and learns that her uncle’s charred body has been found, her life reaches a new level of insanity. Her erratic aunt’s “psychic” abilities are exaggerated by her grief, and have become borderline violent. Alone in an unfamiliar town, Anna struggles to pick up the pieces and establish any sense of normalcy. She desperately wants to trust Zack, the cute boy next door, but even he might know more about the incident than he is letting on.
But when Anna starts feeling an inexplicable pull to the site of her uncle’s murder, she begins to believe that her family’s supernatural gifts are real after all. Torn between loyalty and suspicion, Anna is certain of only one thing: she must discover who killed her uncle or she could be next....
BOOK REVIEW
4.5 STARS
This book can be read as a standalone, even though it is a part of a series. It will not interfere with the understanding of the events of the books. Rest assured.
The Back Door of Midnight was a book with a slow start. As much as the writing style is easy to understand and follow, the story itself wasn't interesting at the beginning. It had a ton of enigma codes and it had a sudden start without introducing the characters or what was happening. It may be interesting to some but it started off on the wrong foot for me. The next few chapters introduced the fire that killed her uncle and provided some background for the reader. However, the story only started to get interesting towards the middle when sufficient information was provided. Only then can you deduce the murderer and have an interest towards the story.
When it comes to the analysis of the character, there's not much we know about Anna O'Neill. All we know was about her being a red-head and had the potential ability of being a psychic. The story was very objective, which I liked, about the mystery. It didn't share unnecessary details that hinders the process of Anna discovering her uncle's killer. It didn't dwell deep into the characters and we only know them on a surface level. However, this may be a bit of a problem in regards to Anna and Zack's relationship. Although we know that they live next door to one another, there is no basis regarding their interest in one another. Sure, they spent time together but there has to be more than that for them to like one another.
I definitely loved the ending. I like how Chandler summarized the events that occurred after they solved the case. It was brief yet very direct. A very short and sweet way to end the story and go through the lingering questions that the reader might have.
TL;DR
Overall, the book was an interesting read. It was difficult to get into it at first but towards the middle, you can start piecing the clues together and it becomes interesting after that. Some parts might be a little boring but I guess the main objective of the book has been met. I definitely loved the way the author ended the story and how direct it was made me like it.
